Celebrating 10 Years of Kahawatu Foundation

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kahawatu Foundation in 2023, we are reaffirming our commitment to improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers and their communities in East Africa.

Kahawatu Foundation has come a long way since 2013.
Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team members, board, partners, donors, and other stakeholders, we are a trusted voice in coffee communities in East Africa.

Our scope has expanded beyond helping smallholder coffee farmers to sustainably increase their productivity and income to focusing on 3 key pillars: Professionalize Farmers, Improve Wellbeing, and Build Confidence. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to building a future where coffee communities are confident and thriving.

Since 2013, we’ve trained 100,000+ coffee farmers in GAP, we’ve supported 800,000+ coffee community members, set up 1,538 income-generating activities and 1,266 Village Savings and Loan Associations, and initiated 50 women’s groups.

One of these women’s groups is the Rama Dufatanemunda women’s association in Ngozi, Burundi, which now has over 130 members. Kahawatu Foundation has been supporting their work to help women achieve economic empowerment through access to land.

During an event in Burundi to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, our team members, board, and partners visited the women of Rama, who were proud to share their stories of how they have developed coffee and other businesses as successful entrepreneurs.

Our anniversary was also a great opportunity to create a new website for Kahawatu Foundation. With a fresh look and feel, the new site better showcases our work to empower coffee farmers and their communities and to share their stories. We encourage you to take a look around!

Finally, we couldn’t have done this without the work and support of the many people and partners who have contributed over the past decade. We are grateful to them all. We can’t wait to see what the next 10 years – and more – will bring as we work towards our vision of a world where coffee communities are confident and thriving.
